Oh we love upcycling projects … here at The Old School Club we were super excited when Currys asked us to run an upcycling event to transform washing machine drums into usable pieces. A few drums later, plenty of scary tools, lots of interesting materials and some guidance from us, the creative bloggers managed to make their own unique and beautiful pieces.

This is one of the sample lampshades we made for the event.

We made tables, lampshades, footstools and decorated boxes. And we had lots of fun!

Some of the tools we used included: power drills, screwdrivers, nuts and bolts, staple guns, glue guns, hammers, screws, upholstery tools, spray glue and a few more ..

The materials were carefully selected so all the final pieces were different. People were divided into groups depending on what they were going to make and allocated to different stations with the right tools and materials. The materials included: table tops (slate, wood on different shapes, garden slabs), foam & fabrics for the footstools, paint (we used Autentico Chalk paint as it looks fab on metal too!), light fittings on different shapes (for hanging and standing) and  fabric, trimmings and buttons for decoration.

We had 5 members of the club helping with the projects: Nick and Jonathan, doing the “hard work”; Noemi, providing creative advice; Celine, helping with the important basics: tea & biscuits!; and myself, supervising the workshop and providing guidance on the upholstery and painting techniques. And obviously the amazing team at GreenLightDigital!

I am preparing another post on how to plan, prepare and deliver an upcycling event. Don’t forget to sign up to the blog by email to get guides, tips & worksheets on how to set up, run and grow your creative business.
